Locking

December 21st 2006 12:01
The creator of Locking was a man called, Don Campbell. In the 1960s, he put together his own moves when performing. It was originally called Campbellocking, but is now only known as Locking. In the 1970s, he developed Locking dance groups and then finally put together a dance group called the Lockers.

Locking is a style of funk and street dance. It is quite the opposite of popping because instead of flexing your muscles, it relies on fast and distinct movements of the body. The name locking is based on the movements. For instance, when a locker freezes from a fast movement, holds that position, and then continues in the same speed as before. The mime style is also considered part of locking.

Dancers who Lock are called Lockers, and they are known to wear colourful and bright clothing, with stripes and suspenders. The best part about Locking is that it can have a comical nature. Other important styles is pointing, walking stationary and grabbing and rotating the hat. It is a bit hard to imagine what Locking is if you have never seen it before, so check out this clip.
