Electric Boogaloo
December 18th 2006 01:55
Electric Boogaloo is a mixture of funk and street dance. In 1977, a dance group called, The Electric Boogaloos made popping and other related styles popular. The Electric Boogaloos consisted of Boogaloo Sam, who was the creator of the dance, followed by Poppin Pete, Skeeter Rabbit, Suga Pop, and Mr.Wiggles.
In Fresno, California, where Sam lived, he started putting together moves, which is now known as boogaloo. He was inspired by the original lockers that he saw perform on television in, 1975. He also created popping and other styles. For those who are unfamiliar with
Electric Boogaloo, it is a fluid style that involves using angles, hip, knee, and head rolls.
As for the word popping, when Sam danced he would say the word 'pop' under his breath every time he flexed. Eventually, people would say, "Hey do that popping stuff."
Popping Pete, learnt how to pop first before he learnt how to electric boogaloo because he found boogaloo hard to master. He has now created moves such as ET, crazy legs, Spider Man and Sleepy Style. He is trying to promote boogaloo all over the world. In fact Popping Pete has sent me two instructional videos on how to boogaloo.
Skeeter Rabbit helped spread funk styles through shows, appearances and classes around the world. On Friday, May 12th, 2006 he passed away. He was known as a true warrior and a tremendous spirit.
Suga Pop did not join the group until 1997. He has produced artists from Cypress Hill to Booya Tribe, and he is currently working on a CD.
Mr.Wiggles, in my opinion is probably the most well-known out of the group. He has appeared in the 'Work It' film clip of Missy Elliott and many others. He grew up in the South Bronx, and was also part of the Rock Steady Crew.
If you want to see what Electric Boogaloo looks like, check out this clip to see a very young Boogaloo Sam, dance.
